You may have come across these strange-looking black-and-white square patterns that are starting to appear in all types of locations.
What are QR Codes?
Without going into too much detail a QR Code is a two-dimensional (matrix) bar code originally created by Toyota subsidiary Denso-Wave in 1994. It was named “QR”, derived from “Quick Response,” as its contents can be decoded at high speed, and at any angle.
Initially designed for tracking parts in vehicle manufacturing, QR Codes are now being used in a much broader context, including both commercial tracking applications NS convenience oriented applications aimed at mobile phone users (known as mobile tagging).
More so, with the rapid growth of Smartphone and mobile internet use, QR (Quick Response) Codes are now growing fast to be one of the hottest offline mobile marketing tools in the marketing world today.
iPhone, Blackberry, Motorola Droid and any phone that runs on the Android operating system, now have code scanning software preinstalled; if not, it can be easily downloaded and installed.
You only need to walk past any telco in any retail store to see that mobile phone usage is still very much on the increase. In fact in 2010, 10% of households had already decided they no longer need a household phone and were solely reliant on mobiles – and it is estimated that by 2019 there may be no landlines left in Australia.[i]
Link traditional media with new media
QR Codes are increasingly appearing in offline advertising such as magazines, billboards, signs, business cards, direct mail post cards, vehicles, T-shirts and other promotional giveaways. With the snap of their smartphones camera capability, consumers can scan and get relevant details and or connect from an offline medium to a mobile or digital medium such as a website.
Make you print more interactive
Some great ideas where you can use QR Codes to engage your customers, use them:
- on postcards and mailers and link your targeted customer directly to relevant web pages or online offers you have.
- on your business cards; Your contacts can scan your card and add all your details directly to their mobile or computer address book.
- to link to a YouTube video in an advertisement on a poster.
- to direct your readers to further reference or training materials online – great for educational purposes.
- in your product catalogue, and link to complete product specifications and or demonstrations online.
- to send an offer coupon or an SMS to your customers phone.
- on your uniforms with special offers, what services you offer or just for some fun.
- to provide nutritional facts, maps, navigation, and location services,
basically to link to anything that can be expanded upon online.
QR Code - Interesting fact file:
The typical barcode holds a maximum of 20 digits, while a QR code can hold up to 7,089 characters, while taking up less space! This ability to hold a great deal of information in a small space makes QR codes a valuable tool for sales and marketing. Imagine the information you could present on a business card.
QR Codes can be scanned from any angle – making them great for mobile users. QR Codes scanners (now shipped as an application on majority of modern mobile phones) decode the content using three squares that are positioned in the corners of the symbol as a reference point.
The long and the short of it, is that QR Codes pack a lot of punch, and can provide an increased return on your marketing investment. Not only leveraging your digital and print marketing, they are trackable and measurable.
QR Codes are now being used by businesses in Australia and around the world to:
- link to website URL's
- link to email addresses
- link to online map programs (providing an address and directions)
- dial phone numbers
- link to discounts and coupons (special offers)
